TOP STORY - JAPAN ROYAL WEDDING
1. What is the role of the Crown Prince in Japanese society? The
Crown Princess? Why is this marriage a particularly signifi-
cant event at this time? (Consider current Japanese political
and economic issues in your answers.) Ask students to discuss
their understanding of women's roles in Japanese society. Does
Crown Princess Masako fit your preconceived notion of a Japan-
ese wife? Why/Why not? What is it about her background and
career that makes her an ideal choice as a prospective empress?
Discuss.
2. How is the Japanese Royal Wedding different from other society
weddings? Divide the class into groups to research one aspect
of Japanese culture: architecture, gardens, clothing, food,
music, art, etc. Gather groups together to share research.
DEBATE: Nature and simplicity are important to the Japanese
culture. Have students informally debate this statement in
light of their research and the video segment.
3. Group students to write a script for a soap opera about the
wooing of Masako by Crown Prince Naruhito. They should
embellish the events of the courtship, then rehearse their
scripts for a class performance. Groups may wish to add music,
costumes, other (fictional) characters etc. Have them perform
for the class. Discuss with students other major society or
royal weddings that could also be "soaped."
4. What is a samurai? What is Crown Princess Masako's relation-
ship to samurai? Have students compare the work and career of
Masako Owada to the historical view of samurai as warriors and
warlords. How has her role of service changed since agreeing
to become Crown Princess? Discuss.
OUR WORLD - OZONE
5. What is ozone? How is it chemically different from oxygen
molecules? How are these two forms of oxygen different in the
effects that they produce on the human body? Why is the deple-
tion of the ozone layer in the stratosphere as problematic as
the abundance of ozone created by pollution in the troposphere?
OUR WORLD - SCHOOL VIDEO
6. Why did the members of the Paladin Society adopt this name?
What are the functions and commitments of the club members?
What do you think students can learn from medieval times that
would be applicable to their lives today? Discuss.
7. What do you think of when the term "The Middle Ages" is used?
In groups have students examine the time period coincident with
the European Middle Ages in other world cultures and report to
the class the events and developments in those cultures at that
time. Have the class select cultures that they consider to be
worth exploring and form clubs to promulgate the methods and
beliefs of those times in that culture.

***** ***** ***** ***** * * ***** ***** ***** DESK: INSURANCE
1. PREVIEWING: What is insurance? What are some reasons why
people purchase insurance?
2. AFTER VIEWING: What is the "Christian Brotherhood Newsletter"?
How does it work? Are there any "rules"? Explain.
3. Why is the newsletter currently under investigation in some
states? Why might some people view it as "a form of unregu-
lated insurance"? Do you agree with that view? Explain.
4. Invite an insurance professional to the class to talk about the
ways your state regulates the insurance business. Is he/she
required to have a license? What "unfair practices" has the
state established? Then divide the class into groups. Have
each group research state/local regulations of other licensed
businesses (real estate brokers, cosmetologists, etc.) and
report its findings to the class. Ask students: Is this
government regulation government "interference" or is it
consumer protection? Can you think of any reasons why any of
these industries should be (a) LESS or (b) MORE regulated?
5. What factors contribute to the high cost of health care in the
U.S.? Have groups of students research the factors that have
caused health care costs to skyrocket and present their
information to the class. Write these factors on the board.
Then have each group choose one factor and brainstorm realistic
ways to reduce those costs. Have groups discuss their
recommendations and assess each for its pros and cons.
Challenge the class to compare its process to that of the
current Health Care Reform Task Force headed by First Lady
Hillary Clinton. Do students think the Task Force will deliver
workable solutions to the U.S. health care crisis? Discuss.
6. To familiarize students with some commonly used insurance
terms, have them research and explain the terms on the STUDENT
HANDOUT (pg 4). Then divide the class into groups and have
each add more terms and explanations to the list. Have each
group research one of the major kinds of insurance (Health,
Life, Homeowner's, Auto) and present a report using their terms
in an explanation of the protection offered by each.
